How to Prepare for a HireVue Interview in 2026

6 min read  ·  Plumlo

Her name was Alex. She said she was a virtual AI recruiter — I thought she was setting up the call. She was the call.

A few questions in, I realized I had prepared for the wrong thing. I was trying to have a conversation. That's not what was happening. I didn't know what it was listening for, or how I was being judged.

So I built the other side of that call.

Practice the conversation until the conversation is yours.

What HireVue actually is

HireVue is a one-way video interview platform. There is no recruiter on the other end. You see a question on screen, get 30 seconds to prepare, and record your answer — typically up to 3 minutes — directly into your camera. Then it moves to the next question.

The whole thing takes 20 to 30 minutes. Your recordings are submitted automatically when you finish. AI reviews them first. Humans only see the candidates who score above a threshold.

If you score below that line, no human ever watches your video. You just don't hear back.

Which companies use HireVue in 2026

HireVue is used heavily in finance, consulting, tech, and retail. If you're applying to any of these organizations, expect to see it:

JPMorgan Goldman Sachs Citi Bain BCG IBM Capital One Microsoft Amazon Deloitte Unilever Delta Air Lines

If you're applying to any company with more than 5,000 employees, assume AI screening is somewhere in the process — whether it's HireVue or something built on the same model.

What HireVue's AI is actually scoring

This is the part most candidates get wrong. They prepare for HireVue like a human interview — practicing rapport, thinking about their energy, trying to seem likable. That's not what's being measured.

What the AI evaluates
Word choice and phrasing High weight
Response structure (STAR format) High weight
Relevance to job description keywords High weight
Tone of voice and pacing Medium weight
Filler word frequency Medium weight
Facial expressions Phased out 2024

HireVue removed facial analysis in 2024 after criticism from researchers and legislators. The AI no longer scores how you look. It scores what you say and how you say it — which means preparation is entirely within your control.

Five things to do before your HireVue

1. Read the job description like a script

HireVue's questions come from the role requirements. Every skill listed is a potential question. Go through the JD and mark the three to five competencies that appear most often. Prepare a specific STAR story for each one before you sit down.

2. Practice out loud — not in your head

Most people prepare by reading notes. HireVue requires you to speak clearly into a camera with no prompting and no human feedback. Those are completely different skills. Speaking your answers once out loud is worth ten times reading them silently.

3. Structure every answer the same way

Situation. Action. Result. HireVue's AI scores answers that are easy to parse — a clear context, a specific action you took, and a concrete outcome. A structured 90-second answer outscores an unstructured 3-minute one every time.

4. Eliminate filler words

"Um," "like," "you know," "basically" — these are tracked and penalized. You won't notice them when you're nervous. The only way to catch them is to record yourself and listen back before your actual interview.

5. Practice with an AI that scores your answers

The closest preparation you can do is a realistic simulation built from your actual job description, delivered by voice, scored on answer content. That's what Plumlo does. One session before your HireVue changes how you answer under pressure.

What to expect on the day

You'll receive a link by email. Click it when you're ready — once you start, the clock runs. You can't pause between questions. Most employers allow one retry per question, but assume every take is final.

Test your camera and microphone before you open the link. Find a quiet space with neutral lighting. Don't sit in front of a window — the backlight washes you out. Look at the camera, not the screen. That's where eye contact lives.

The AI doesn't see the room. The human reviewer who watches your shortlisted video does.

Common questions

Does HireVue make the final hiring decision?

No. HireVue surfaces a shortlist for human review. Candidates who score below the threshold typically aren't reviewed by a recruiter at all — but the final call is always made by the hiring team.

Can I retake a HireVue interview?

Some employers allow one retry per question before you submit. Once submitted, the interview is final. Check the instructions inside your HireVue link before starting — the retake policy varies by employer.

How long should my answers be?

Aim for 60 to 90 seconds. You have up to 3 minutes, but longer isn't better. A structured 90-second answer with a clear outcome scores higher than a rambling 3-minute one.

Is there a way to practice before a real HireVue?

Yes. Plumlo conducts a live voice interview built from your actual job description and scores your answers the way an AI recruiter would. It's the closest simulation to the real thing available.

Does HireVue still use facial recognition?

No. HireVue phased out facial analysis in 2024. The AI now focuses on verbal content — what you say, how you structure it, and your vocal delivery. How you look is no longer part of the AI score.
