A lot of people meet Zara before they ever talk to a person at micro1. You open a link, your camera, mic and screen are on, and an AI recruiter starts asking about the one skill you picked.
The questions get technical fast, and you get a result right after.
Know what it checks before you start, then practice until the conversation is yours.
What the micro1 Zara interview actually is
Zara is micro1's AI recruiter. micro1's AI interview guide describes a conversational interview with Zara that you can take on demand, any time, from anywhere. It asks open-ended technical questions based on the role you chose, and it can include a coding challenge for technical roles or a human data exercise for annotator roles.
You'll usually meet Zara in one of two ways. Either you're applying for expert work through micro1 itself, where the interview decides whether you meet micro1's certification criteria, or a company is using micro1's AI interviewer to screen its own applicants. In that case the employer sets the interview's structure, length, format and language, according to micro1's knowledge base.
A 2025 paper by micro1's own team says Zara adjusts its questions based on your answers and can answer clarifying questions during the interview. It also says human recruiters review the evaluations, and candidates who do well move on to human interview rounds.
What Zara is checking
micro1 says the interview gives a real-time result on whether you meet its global certification criteria. Its knowledge base says employer reports show scores, insights and evaluation results so recruiters can compare candidates consistently. micro1 doesn't publish its rubric or how answers are weighted.
Two details are easy to miss. First, language: the knowledge base says languages can't be mixed within an interview, and switching to a second language partway through may lower your score. Second, proctoring: employers can switch it on or off for each interview. micro1's page on what proctoring checks is behind a login, so we can't tell you exactly what it flags.
When the SF Standard covered Zara in 2025, it reported that she sends the employer a summary and a video recording of the interview, and that micro1 says Zara doesn't make the final hiring decision.
Setup, before you click start
micro1's candidate troubleshooting guide is specific. Use a laptop, desktop or phone with at least 8 GB of RAM and 4 CPU cores, and a stable 4G connection or better. Use the latest Chrome, or Safari, and avoid Incognito or Private mode, Firefox and Brave. Allow camera, microphone and screen sharing, and run micro1's system check at interview.micro1.ai/check-system before the day.
Sit somewhere quiet and well lit, close other apps and tabs, speak clearly and keep your camera centered. If something breaks mid-interview, there's a "Having Trouble?" button in the bottom right corner. After that, support is email only at help@micro1.ai, with replies within 24 hours, Monday to Friday.
Five things to do before your micro1 interview
1. Pick one core skill and own it
micro1's own tip is to choose one core skill or job type to be evaluated on. Pick the one you can talk about in depth, with real projects behind it, not the broadest one on your resume.
2. Prepare for technical depth, not small talk
The questions are open-ended and technical, and Zara follows up on what you say. Have two or three specific projects ready where you can explain what you built, the tradeoffs you made and what went wrong.
3. Stay in one language the whole way
If you get to choose, pick the language you're strongest in and don't switch mid-interview. micro1 says mixing languages may lower your score.
4. Do the system check the day before
Camera, mic and screen sharing all have to work, and the browser rules are strict. A failed setup is the easiest way to lose an attempt you prepared for.
5. Rehearse out loud with a voice interviewer
micro1 points candidates to its own Interview Prep tool, and it's worth using. Practicing with a second voice interviewer helps too, because explaining technical work out loud under follow-up questions is a skill on its own. Plumlo runs a live voice interview built from your actual job description and gives you a scored debrief.
After the interview
For micro1's own certification, you get a result right away. If you don't pass, micro1 says you can request feedback. A 2025 paper by micro1's team describes that feedback as two to three strengths and two to three areas to improve, sent by email, and says it deliberately leaves out soft skills and communication. If a company used Zara to screen you, the next step is up to that company.
Common questions
Is Zara a real person?
No. Zara is micro1's AI recruiter. micro1 describes the interview as a conversation with Zara, and micro1's CEO Ali Ansari told the SF Standard in 2025 that the company does not want to present an AI system as a human.
How long is a micro1 Zara interview?
micro1 doesn't publish a standard length. Its knowledge base says employers set the interview's structure, duration and format, so check your invite. Any exact figure you read elsewhere is not from micro1.
Do I need my camera on?
Yes. micro1's candidate troubleshooting guide says to allow camera, microphone and screen sharing, run its system check first, and keep the camera centered.
Can I choose the interview language?
Sometimes. micro1's knowledge base says the employer either sets one language or lets the candidate pick when starting. Languages can't be mixed within an interview, and switching to a second language may lower your score.
Can I retake a micro1 interview?
micro1's public pages don't say. If something goes wrong, email help@micro1.ai with your name, application email, role and a screenshot. micro1 says support is email only and replies within 24 hours, Monday to Friday.
What feedback do I get if I don't pass?
micro1's AI interview guide says you can request feedback if you don't reach certification. A 2025 paper by micro1's team describes that feedback as two to three strengths and two to three areas to improve, sent by email, and says it leaves out soft skills and communication.
Is there a micro1 practice interview?
micro1's AI interview guide points candidates to its Interview Prep tool to simulate interviews before the real one, and to a short demo video of the process.
